Clean Lines, Honest Materials
The Chantana Woven Straw Bag is a celebration of minimalism, structure, and traditional Thai weaving. With its tall rectangular form and bold wooden handles, this design strips back the unnecessary and allows materials and craftsmanship to take centre stage. There’s no lining, no fasteners, no added embellishment—just natural straw, sculptural shape, and considered proportion. If you appreciate bags that blend simplicity with strength, the Chantana delivers it effortlessly.
Tall Rectangular Shape with a Grounded Feel
This tote’s upright form is defined by its tall, gently curved rectangular shape. The height adds elegance, while the wide base ensures practicality. It stands tall without toppling, making it ideal for everyday use when structure matters. The silhouette feels timeless, nodding to both vintage handbag proportions and modern minimalism. Because of its clean lines, the Chantana Woven Straw Bag suits everything from casual linen outfits to more tailored looks.
Handwoven Straw Body with Uniform Texture
Artisans craft each bag by hand from water hyacinth straw, using a tight, vertical weave that creates an even, refined texture. The smooth surface and consistent tension reflect the weaver’s skill and make the bag durable enough for daily wear. This natural material is lightweight yet strong, allowing the design to maintain shape while still offering comfort. The straw’s soft golden tone adds warmth to its clean aesthetic.
Bold Wooden Handles for a Sculptural Finish
The oval wooden handles instantly elevate the design. Smooth, polished, and finished in a deep brown tone, they arch comfortably over the top and add bold contrast to the pale straw. The sculptural cutout echoes vintage styles while keeping the overall look modern and grounded. The handles sit flush against the bag body, providing both structural support and visual impact without overpowering the clean weave.
The Meaning Behind ‘Chantana’
In Thai, ‘Chantana’ is a name associated with elegance, clarity, and tradition—fitting qualities for this design. The Chantana Woven Straw Bag mirrors those values through its refined form, balanced shape, and cultural roots in Thai craftsmanship. It’s a bag that doesn’t rely on trends but instead offers timeless functionality built from tradition.
Everyday Function Without Fuss
This bag’s size and shape make it ideal for your everyday essentials—phone, wallet, sunglasses, and a few extras—without feeling oversized. It’s compact enough to carry comfortably yet tall enough to accommodate longer items like notebooks or slim water bottles. Whether you’re heading to a cafe, market, or city stroll, the Chantana Woven Straw Bag adapts with ease while keeping your look polished.
Lightweight, Unlined Interior
Staying true to its minimalist design, the interior is left unlined. This reduces weight, increases breathability, and showcases the raw natural material. There are no zippers or pockets—just a single, open space that encourages simplicity. You can always add your own fabric pouch inside if you want to separate smaller items, but many customers appreciate the honesty of the open design.
Handmade in Northern Thailand
The Chantana Woven Straw Bag is handwoven by skilled artisans in Phayao, a region known for its water hyacinth weaving traditions. The entire process—from harvesting the straw to shaping and finishing the structure—is done manually. Each bag takes several days to complete and reflects years of weaving experience. Supporting these makers means supporting heritage, rural employment, and environmentally responsible production methods.
Sustainably Made from Natural Materials
Water hyacinth is a fast-growing aquatic plant, harvested locally in Thailand and dried to create strong, flexible fibres. It’s biodegradable, renewable, and non-toxic, making it a sustainable choice for conscious consumers. The wooden handles are made from sustainably sourced wood, shaped and sanded by hand. The Chantana Woven Straw Bag is proof that ethical, low-impact materials can produce something both functional and beautiful.
Ideal for Gifting or Minimalist Wardrobes
This bag makes an elegant gift for anyone who loves simplicity, neutral tones, and natural fibres. It suits people of all ages and pairs easily with most wardrobes. For birthdays, holidays, or slow-fashion upgrades, the Chantana Woven Straw Bag is a timeless option that can be worn year after year. It’s not flashy—but it is quietly confident.
Pairs Well with Natural Fabrics and Tones
Thanks to its neutral colours and clean build, this bag complements linen, cotton, and textured fabrics effortlessly. Pair it with tonal outfits in cream, olive, navy, or terracotta, or use it to add structure to softer silhouettes. The brown wooden handles tie in well with leather sandals, belts, or sunglasses. Whether you dress up or down, this piece grounds your look with handcrafted simplicity.
Part of Our Eco-Friendly & Natural Straw Bag Collection
The Chantana belongs to our Eco-Friendly & Natural Straw Bags collection. These designs focus on raw materials, honest shapes, and traditional Thai craftsmanship. If you enjoy the look and feel of woven straw without embellishment or colourwork, this collection is where utility meets intention. Other pieces in this series explore similar shapes with slight variations in height, weave, and handle style.
Limited Custom Options Available
For larger orders or specific requests, we can offer customisations such as internal lining, alternative wood finishes, or subtle embroidery. Customisation requires 14–21 days production time and may include a fee. If you’re looking to create a tailored version of the Chantana Woven Straw Bag, our team can help bring that to life with your design preferences in mind.
Simple Care Instructions
To preserve your bag’s shape and condition, store it in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid contact with moisture and prolonged direct sunlight. Dust it gently with a dry cloth if needed, and do not overload with heavy items. To help retain its upright structure, fill it with soft paper or fabric while stored. With these simple habits, the Chantana Woven Straw Bag will maintain its integrity season after season.
Built by Hand. Powered by Thai Craft
The Chantana Woven Straw Bag is made by artisans supported by The Straw Bag Company’s network of over 80 workers across Thailand. Our Phayao team specialises in straw weaving, while finishing work and wooden handles are prepared in Chiang Mai. We invest directly in rural craft development, school leaver employment, and sustainable working models. As part of Thailand’s OTOP programme and supported by Amazing Thailand and TAT News, every bag purchased helps preserve and promote Thai craftsmanship for future generations.

Delivery Times by Destination
Delivery speed depends on your location. Within Thailand, parcels typically arrive within one to three business days. For customers in Asia-Pacific, the average is three to five business days. Deliveries to Europe and the UK take around four to nine days, while North America generally sees delivery in five to seven days. In Oceania, delivery takes about four to six business days, and in South America, the timeline ranges from nine to eleven business days. Your country’s national postal service will complete the final stage of delivery after EMS has handled the international leg.
Lead Time for Custom Orders
If you order a customised version of the Chantana Bag, such as name embroidery, colour variations, or unique handle options, please allow fourteen to twenty-one days for production. All custom work is carried out by women artisans in Phayao, Chiang Mai, Phatthalung, and Nakhon Si Thammarat using traditional weaving techniques. For standard versions of the bag, dispatch typically takes place within three business days of purchase confirmation.
Inspection and Protective Packaging
Before leaving our facility, each Chantana Woven Straw Bag is carefully inspected for quality. We review the weave, handles, lining, and any decorative elements. Once approved, the bag is photographed and video recorded for final documentation. It is then packed in a white cotton drawstring pouch and boxed using secure airfreight packaging designed to protect it throughout its journey.
Clear and Separate EMS Shipping Costs
We charge EMS Thailand’s official flat rate for parcels up to one kilogram. Many orders containing two bags qualify for the same rate. Shipping charges are not hidden in the product price. Instead, they are clearly itemised during checkout to ensure total transparency and accuracy in your purchase summary.
Customs and Delivery Responsibilities
While most Chantana Bags arrive without any additional customs fees, some countries may impose import taxes or duties depending on their regulations. These charges are the responsibility of the customer. After EMS completes the international segment, your national postal service handles final delivery. If you experience customs delays or delivery complications, our team is available to help with tracking updates and resolution support.
Returns and Refunds for Faulty Items
If your Chantana Bag arrives with a fault or damage, you must contact us within forty-eight hours of receiving the parcel. We offer a fourteen-day return policy for confirmed faulty or incorrect items. Refunds cover only the price of the product. Shipping costs are refunded only if the issue is verified. All returns must be sent using tracked airfreight back to our facility in Nakhon Sawan.
Return Conditions and Refund Process
Items must be unused, in their original packaging, and securely repacked to qualify for a refund. Customised orders are not eligible for return unless there is a confirmed fault. ORDERING INFORMATION
OUR FOUNDATION
Phayao Leads Our Water Hyacinth Bag Production
The Chantana Woven Straw Bag is handmade by Thai women working within The Straw Bag Company’s structured artisan production network. Our main harvesting and weaving hub is in Phayao, northern Thailand, where water hyacinth straw is locally sourced and processed by hand. More than 30 full-time female artisans are based in this region. They meet daily in group-based environments to weave, collaborate, and fulfil active customer orders. Their work ensures the quality and consistency of each water hyacinth bag in our collection.
Seagrass Weaving and Finishing in Regional Teams
While Phayao handles hyacinth production, other regions including Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung specialise in weaving with local seagrass, known as krajood. Once woven, these bags are sent to Chiang Mai where experienced women complete the hand-stitching and detailing in small village-based workgroups. Across the country, we currently employ over 80 staff. This includes harvesting teams, weavers, finishers, logistics staff, and regional coordinators who manage local production.
Time-Based Pay and Flexible Scheduling
Our model is designed to support real women with real responsibilities. Many of our artisans are mothers, caregivers, or elder community members. They work either from home or in small team settings within their own villages. Artisans are paid based on time worked, not per item. This ensures fair and consistent income without pressure to produce at speed. It also allows them to manage childcare, family duties, and community roles without sacrificing earnings or quality.
Community Reinvestment at the Centre of Our Model
Fifteen percent of all company profits are reinvested directly into the communities that produce our bags. These funds are used for specific, practical support. If an artisan cannot afford material costs to begin a new order, we provide upfront assistance. For families with children, we help cover school transport, supplies, and uniforms. In times of personal or family hardship, local team leaders can coordinate short-term help to prevent disruptions to work. We also fund school leaver training programmes, pairing younger women with senior artisans in their villages to learn weaving and embroidery techniques in a paid, structured format.
Working Alongside Thailand’s National Development Goals
The Straw Bag Company proudly supports the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) initiative, which promotes rural entrepreneurship and cultural preservation through craft. We also contribute to the wider vision of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Our continued support for the TAT News platform and the Amazing Thailand campaign reflects our belief in building sustainable economic opportunities through community-led production.
Crafted With Care, Built on Respect
The Chantana Woven Straw Bag reflects everything our model stands for. It is handmade using traditional techniques. It is woven by women earning fair wages in their own communities. It contributes to local livelihoods and generational skill preservation. Each purchase directly supports rural jobs, ethical production, and the long-term survival of Thai weaving heritage.
